#28: SuperHouse or SuperHuman?

Is home automation just about toys for lazy rich people? I don’t think so! It’s about using technology to extend our own capabilities and become just a little bit superhuman.

As humans we all have physical limitations. Some of us are healthy and strong, and some of us aren’t, but ultimately we all get older and find that it’s harder to do things that we used to do easily. I see technology as an enabler that can extend our abilities or help us overcome limitations in our bodies or our environment.

Way back in 2011 I did a conference presentation titled “Use The Force, Linus!” which was about using Open Source technology to give ourselves Jedi powers. Many of the examples I covered in that presentation  were drawn from my home automation projects.

  2. Jon, I just watched your newest youtube episode and I really enjoyed it. It looks like you have been at this for quite a long time. Funny you should mention Connectix. I just picked up two of them at my local Goodwill thrift store for $8 each, including the power supplies. I had planned on, maybe using them in ways similar to what you did. At that price, I couldn’t resist picking them up for future use. When designing a superhouse, you can’t have too many toys in the goody box. When I have time I plan on doing a Google search to see what interesting ideas are floating around out on the web. Hopefully I will have some interesting ideas to add to my build blog.

  3. hello, i am Brian doing my undergraduate degree in physics technology so i really enjoyed your videos and i would like to know whether it is possible for me to program my arduino UNO and embed it with a keypad, relay and a micro SD card reader?
thanks hope to hear from you soon

  4. I really enjoy the sharing of your experiences and you have loaded my “things to do list” with way too many items. By the way, is that an Aussie thing of wearing bare feet around the house? I noticed Dave Jones having the same habit.
